I love the winter! I love the coats and the scarves and all the fashion opportunities they present. As a former New Yorker, New York Fashion Week has a special place in my heart. Let’s take a look at some of the trends that we saw on the runways at New York Fashion Week. So even though London Fashion Week is ending let’s take a look back at New York’s shows.
Before moving on to the trends I’d like to showcase two designers that in my opinion did outstanding jobs. NYFW was full of amazing collections- Jeremy Scott with his crazy colors and prints, Tommy Hilfiger with his sailor girls, Michael Kors with his flirty fun outfits, Jenny Packham with her gorgeous gowns and many others really caught my eye but these had a certain magic that brought me personally to a fantasy land. There was the Marchesa collection, a celebration of a certain girly princess fantasy that so many of us had as little girls and still have now (I am one of those, I admit..) with beautiful fabrics and impeccable embellishments they really captured that girly fantasyland where we all are pretty princesses. Every single dress was beautiful on it’s own and each one stood for itself which is a huge feat for a designer.
Another amazing show was by Naeem Khan, Naeem Khan has couture dreams and you could really feel it in his designs. He paid such close attention to detail as he embroidered his way through the collection creating stunning dresses inspired by NYC architecture and art deco which I love! In addition when Naeem Khan came out at the end he was accompanied by Trinity Faith Moran, a young girl who is battling stage 3 Rhabdomyosarcoma. Through Make A Wish she attended the fashion show and helped with some of the designing which was a very sweet touch.
Marchesa and Naeem Khan by me 🙂
Now back to the trends- What’s a girl to wear next winter?
Pussy Bows/ Blouse Scarves- One of my all-time favorite trends that you can find in my closet as well was all over the place at NYFW- we’ll see if it continues at the rest of the fashion weeks..Designers who featured the Pussy Bow- Rebecca Minkoff, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren
Fringes of assorted widths and styles whether they were stringy and “Flapper-y” as featured at Marchesa, Naeem Khan, Reem Acra …. or more think like strips of material at Herve Leger, DVF. Also Altuzarra, Ralph Lauren..
20s- Flapper inspiration– another trend that I love that could be seen by an array of designers including Marchesa, Naeem Khan.
Sheer (and Flowy) Materials– Sheer Material everywhere- some left little to the imagination others used it in an abundance to form interesting textures and silhouettes. This was featured at pretty much every show, the use of light flowy and often sheer summer-like materials was really a rule breaking move seeing how this was a winter show but as I mentioned in a previous post- winters aren’t always cold.
Florals– Michael Kors, Monique Lhullier, Marchesa, Oscar De La Renta, Altuzarra, Zac Posen, Christian Siriano and many more adapted the summery motif for winter or just decided to break the rules very much like the sheer and flowy materials.
Furs– Because it’s winter and why not?! Michael Kors, Altuzarra, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Jeremy Scott, Monique Lhullier, DVF and many others used the chic material (probably the fake version) and made it even more wearable for next winter.
Plaid– a classic that comes in so many shapes, forms and colors. Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, Ralph Lauren
Playing around with slits at the front of skirts/ dresses/ asymmetrical hemlines– Monique Lhullier, Altuzarra, Christian Siriano, Jenny Packham, DVR, Reem Acra
90s Throwbacks-Jeremy Scott with his 90s motifs and many others with silhouettes that brought back many 90s memories like spaghetti straps and grunge-y styles.
Beads and Sparkles– Another favorite of mine that is so much fun! Jenny Packham, Altuzarra, Marchesa, Jeremy Scott, Naeem Khan, Christian Siriano, DVF, Reem Acra
Cutouts – Victoria Beckham, Calvin Klein, DVF, Naeem Khan, Monique Lhullier, Christian Siriano, Reem Acra
Leopard print– nothing new but it’s another one of my favorite trends- I’m so happy it hasn’t gone anywhere 🙂 Michael Kors, Jeremy Scott, Monique Lhullier
Will we be wearing these next winter? And will the rest of the shows feature the same/ similar trends? Only time will tell..
